Why can’t I get activeSync to connect properly?

Answer

Microsoft’s ActiveSync software is used to communicate between the field computer (GeoExplorer, Recon, Ranger, TSCe, Juno ST, Etc) and your desktop computer.  If ActiveSync or your field computer are not set up properly the connection can’t be made, and you will be unable to communicate with your device.

Solution

ActiveSync not connecting can be a result from a number of problems.  Sometimes it’s a matter of doing a soft reset on the field device, or updating the Operating System in the device.  Other times it may involve your IT personnel configuring software correctly to allow ActiveSync connections.  Go through the list below to troubleshoot your problem.

  1. Do you have the most current version of ActiveSync? (v4.5 as of  9/1/2007)
  2.  Make sure the device is turned on and connected to the desktop with a USB or serial cable.
  3.  Make sure the desktop sees the device.  Restart computer or update windows.
  4.  Geo Explorer:  Make sure the device placed in the cradle correctly
    • Place the nose in first, and then push the unit down.
    • 2003 models have to use the black cradle and 2005 models use the grey cradle…they can’t be interchanged.
    • 2005 models: Make sure you have the most recent OS Rev loaded.
      • Follow the directions for the GeoExplorer OS upgrade on this site.
  5. Do you have antivirus software or a firewall installed on the desktop?
