Trimble Introduces New Handheld Computer for Field Data Collection – Trimble Nomad 5

FRANKFURT, Germany, Oct 16, 2018 –  Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) announced today the launch of the Trimble® Nomad® 5 handheld computer—the next generation of its rugged Nomad series of handhelds. Built for tasks such as data collection, asset management and inspections, the Nomad 5 is designed to make the work of professional field teams easier, more productive and efficient.

The announcement was made today at INTERGEO 2018, the world’s largest conference on geodesy, geoinformatics and land management.

The Nomad 5 is flexible and easy to use—an all-in-one versatile package that features a streamlined form factor, a 5-inch sunlight-readable touch screen and an Android™ 8.1 operating system. Intuitive to operate straight out of the box, it is certified to military (MIL-STD-810G) specifications for ruggedness and includes an all-day, user-replaceable battery, programmable hard keys, and a powerful 2.2 GHz Qualcomm® processor. The Nomad 5 gives mobile field workers a reliable tool they can depend on to collect data, no matter what the conditions or environment.

“Geographic Information Systems (GIS) professionals require a dependable handheld computer they can be confident will get the job done in any environment while making their field tasks easier to complete,” said Jason Rossback, marketing director for Trimble Geospatial field solutions. “The Nomad 5 offers a familiar Android-based user experience and bright screen display while delivering ultra-rugged performance and positioning accuracy for professional-grade tasks that consumer smartphones and tablets cannot achieve.”

The Nomad 5 features a Trimble EMPOWER module bay which provides the ability to attach user-replaceable modules such as RFID/Barcode, GNSS or custom modules. “The modular expansion system offers field workers the power to customize a mobile computing solution to their workflow,” said Ben John, business area director for Trimble Mobile Computing Solutions. “Being able to swap functionalities to suit the job at hand as well as the flexibility to complete multiple tasks with one device gives organizations the confidence of knowing their investment is adaptable for future needs.”

The Trimble EMPOWER modules can be used on any mobile device platform with an EMPOWER module bay, including the recently released Trimble TSC7 survey controller and the Trimble Ranger™ 7 handheld. Current EMPOWER modules available include:

  • Sub-meter L1/L-Band Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver that supports Trimble RTX™ corrections technology and multi-constellations for increased positioning accuracy worldwide
  • 1D/2D barcode imager for asset tracking
  • 1D/2D barcode imager plus UHF RFID reader for asset tracking

Users simply attach the module of choice and start work immediately—with no external receiver, antenna pole or device tray required.

The Nomad 5 supports real-time integration between the field and office with Wi-Fi and 4G LTE cellular data connectivity. It comes with Google Mobile Services certification to access and run Google core applications, as well as professional software applications. Trimble apps, including Trimble TerraFlex™ software, Trimble Penmap® for Android software, and the Trimble Catalyst™ software-based GNSS receiver are supported, in addition to the Esri® Collector for ArcGIS® field app.
